Here are some of our favourite walking adventures in and around York:
Mount Brown (Wonborel)
A local favourite, Mount Brown rewards you with sweeping views over York and the surrounding farmlands.
You’ve got two options:
Take the easy way - drive up to the top and enjoy a relaxed wander around.
Or challenge yourself -hike up from town and really earn that view.
Either way, pack a picnic, bring a blanket, and stay for sunset — the golden light across the valley is absolutely magical.
York Walks – History in Your Step
Thanks to the Shire of York and Trails WA, you can take yourself on a self-guided walking tour that brings the town’s rich history to life.
Hidden Gems Walk (2.8km loop)
Starting at the York Visitor Centre, this scenic loop winds through heritage-lined streets, quiet parks, and beautifully preserved gardens. It’s a lovely way to slow down and soak up the charm of one of WA’s oldest inland towns.
Convicts and Crossings (0.8–3.4km)
Walk in the footsteps of York’s early settlers and convicts. This short trail network features highlights like the suspension bridge over the Avon River and the historic Convict Depot.
York Play Trail
Perfect for families, this trail starts at the Town Hall and heads down toward the river. It’s designed for all ages, blending play, learning, and nature in one relaxed adventure.
The Avon River Walk – Best in Winter
In cooler months, the Avon River is at its most beautiful. Take a stroll along its banks, breathe in the crisp eucalyptus-scented air, and listen to the gentle flow of water. It's peaceful, grounding, and totally rejuvenating.
Bigger Bushwalks
Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary
If you’re up for a day trip, Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary (about an hour from York) is an absolute gem. With trails ranging from 2.5km to 12km, you'll wander through protected bushland bursting with birdlife, wildflowers, and stunning views.

Northam River Loop

If you're looking for a stunning walk in the Perth Hills, Lesmurdie Falls is a must-see.
This trail offers:

Great photo spots — especially in winter and early spring when the falls are flowing
